Muskoka Guides · Updated October 2026

Thanksgiving Day is Monday, October 12. The colour is already uneven, so arrange an Algonquin day pass before you count on the park.

The weekend in brief

Saturday, October 10 through Monday, October 12, 2026. On Discover Muskoka's October 6 update, Huntsville and Algonquin are far ahead of Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes. That page says Highway 60 day-use passes are sold out on October 10 and 11. Ontario Parks' Algonquin note, dated October 5, tells visitors to get a daily vehicle permit up to five days ahead. Call 705-996-6799 to ask which nights are open.

What this weekend is

Canadian Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday in October. In 2026 that Monday is October 12, and the days covered here are Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Discover Muskoka's fall colour page, updated October 6, 2026, calls October 9 to 18 the peak golden encore, and labels those dates an educated guess based on past years. Their guessed peak for maple colour was October 4 to 8, which has already passed. Wind and rain move the leaves, so treat the window as a reason to go and read the reports the morning you leave.

Town-by-town colour notes are in where the fall colour is right now. Fire rules differ by town, as covered in campfires at a cottage this fall.

Where the colour stands for these three days

Ontario Parks' fall colour page lists:

  • Algonquin, report date October 5, 2026. Dominant colour yellow and orange. Colour change 90. Leaf fall 30. Best viewing along the Highway 60 corridor, trails, and day-use areas. Get a daily vehicle permit up to five days ahead. Park only in designated areas. Roadside parking is described as dangerous and illegal.
  • Arrowhead, near Huntsville, report date October 1, 2026. Dominant colour orange. Colour change 90. Leaf fall 20. Named lookouts: Big Bend Lookout, Beach Area 1, and the Arrowhead Lake Trail.

Discover Muskoka, updated October 6, 2026, calls the region "advancing to peak":

  • Huntsville, 80 to 90 percent, almost full colour, 20 percent leaf fall.
  • Algonquin Park, 90 percent, almost full colour, 30 percent leaf fall.
  • Lake of Bays, 50 to 60 percent.
  • Gravenhurst, 40 to 50 percent.
  • Bracebridge, 30 to 40 percent, pockets of colour, green beginning to fade.
  • Muskoka Lakes, 30 to 40 percent, the same description as Bracebridge.
  • Georgian Bay, on their label, 10 to 20 percent, green still dominant. Parry Sound and Midland are outside that label.

Friends of Algonquin Park include a Lookout Trail photo dated October 6, 2026, and they are specific about the weekend. Maple peak on the Highway 60 corridor was September 29, 2026, two days later than their long-run average. Recent rain and wind have been dropping fragile maple leaves. They write that Thanksgiving weekend visitors will have missed the best maple canopy colour, and that aspens, the maple understory, and increasingly yellow tamarack are what they expect to offer the best viewing over the weekend. Tamarack is worth a stop at Spruce Bog Boardwalk, the Mizzy Lake Trail, or the Opeongo Road.

Thanksgiving weekend visitors will have missed the best maple canopy.

Friends of Algonquin Park, October 6, 2026

The same Friends page says Ontario Parks will close Hardwood Lookout Trail, and its parking lot, on October 10, 11, and 12, 2026, to keep traffic moving. It also lists Thanksgiving weekend, October 10, 11, and 12, among the busiest weekends they expect, and it suggests the East Gate near Whitney if the West Gate is backed up. Tea Lake Campground and its washrooms are listed as open on weekends from September 12 to October 12, 2026, for day-use visitors.

Algonquin day-use on October 10 and 11

Discover Muskoka's October 6 update says Highway 60 day-use passes are sold out on October 10 and 11. The sold-out dates named there are October 10 and 11.

Ontario Parks' Algonquin colour note, report date October 5, tells visitors to obtain a daily vehicle permit up to five days in advance to guarantee access. Check Ontario Parks before you drive, and keep a plan that still works if the park is full at noon.

From The Mara, Arrowhead Provincial Park is about 43 minutes in normal traffic. Arrowhead's colour report is dated October 1.

A cottage weekend, not a party

No parties at any cottage. A long weekend does not change that. Call 705-996-6799 to ask about events. Visiting guests must be registered and approved ahead of time.

If a fire is part of the plan, check the township page before you burn. Bracebridge's noise rules, printed on the fire danger page, limit fireworks to Victoria Day and Canada Day, or the day immediately before or after those holidays. Thanksgiving falls outside those holidays. The campfire guide has the town-by-town notes.

Four cottages for the long weekend

Four Homeseeker cottages. Call 705-996-6799 and ask which nights are open. The drive times below are the ones already on the cottage pages.

Good Times

Hemlock Hideaway

The Mara sits in the Town of Huntsville, which Discover Muskoka had at 80 to 90 percent on October 6. Good Times is on Morrison Lake near Gravenhurst, listed at 40 to 50 percent. Those are the town-wide figures. Hemlock Hideaway is in Parry Sound, outside those Muskoka percentages. Bayside is in the Town of Midland. Ontario Parks' Awenda report, dated October 2, 2026, was still mostly green: colour change 30, leaf fall 10. Awenda is on Georgian Bay, north of Midland, so that shore is behind Huntsville.

The Bala Cranberry Festival is October 16 to 18, the weekend after Thanksgiving. The farm harvest listed above is the event that overlaps this weekend.

Colour drives named on the same Discover Muskoka page: Muskoka Road 17 from Gravenhurst to Bracebridge, with a stop at Muskoka Beach; Highway 117 towards Baysville and Dorset; Highway 118 east from Bracebridge to Highway 35; Muskoka Road 13 from Severn Bridge towards Torrance and the Torrance Barrens. Lookouts on that page: Lions Lookout in Huntsville, Huckleberry Rock near Milford Bay, and the Dorset Lookout Tower. From Good Times, the cottage page puts Hardy Lake Provincial Park at about 40 minutes and Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve at about 26 minutes.
