Bayside in brief

Bayside is a four-bedroom, two-bathroom waterfront cottage on Georgian Bay in Midland, Ontario. It sleeps 12 across 11 beds and has a shallow-entry sand beach, a seasonal dock, kayaks, a boathouse rooftop lounge, a fire pit, a covered lakeview patio with a barbecue, two gas fireplaces and two living areas. Downtown Midland is about 10 minutes by car and Toronto about 2 hours 15 minutes. Small pets are welcome with approval. Call 705-996-6799 to check dates.

Sand underfoot

Bayside is about the beach. The lawn runs down to a shallow, sandy entry on Georgian Bay, the kind of gentle water families look for, with a dock reaching out past it. Kayaks are included. And on the boathouse roof, a row of loungers faces out over the bay, which settles the question of where everyone will be at sunset.

The younger kids enjoyed the game selection and beach, the older kids loved the dock and lily pad, the adults loved the deck chairs and fire pit.

Two living rooms, two fireplaces

Inside, about 1,500 square feet are arranged for a crowd without feeling like one. The main living room looks straight out to the water through a wide picture window. A double-sided gas fireplace warms the dining table, and a second living area on the lower level, with its own gas fireplace and two sets of bunk beds, gives the kids somewhere to sprawl. Smart TVs, giant games and a coffee and cocktail bar take care of the rest.

Outside, in any season

The lakeview patio is covered, with a barbecue set up for year-round use, and there is outdoor dining for eight or more. Evenings end at the fire pit on the lawn, red chairs in a circle and the bay going gold. In winter, the fireplaces and the view do the work, and Mount St. Louis Moonstone is about 41 minutes away for skiing.
