New Year's at the Lake: Ring In 2027 at an Ontario Cottage, Not an Airport

October 23, 2026•4 min read

Picture last New Year's Eve. Maybe it was a crowded bar, a coat check line that took longer than the countdown, and a rideshare surge that made midnight feel very expensive. Now picture this one: a fire going, the people you actually like in one room, a hot tub steaming outside, and a commute to bed that's one flight of stairs.

That's New Year's at the lake. Here's how to plan it.

Plenty of Canadians are staying closer to home

Statistics Canada's latest travel release (published September 22, 2026) shows Canadian-resident return trips from the United States rose 10.1% in July compared with a year earlier, after 15 straight months of year-over-year declines. Even so, those trips were still 25.6% below July 2024. In plain terms: a lot of people have rediscovered how good it is to travel close to home, and Ontario cottage country is a short drive away for most of the province.

Why New Year's Eve at a cottage beats a night out

  • No last call. The party ends when you say it does.

  • No one has to drive. Everyone's already home when the ball drops.

  • The kids can come. They can make it to midnight, or not, and be asleep upstairs either way.

  • Your playlist, your rules. No DJ who only knows one song from 2009.

  • New Year's Day is built in. Late breakfast, a winter walk, and absolutely no plans.

New Year's Eve at the cottage: a simple game plan

Afternoon: arrive and settle in

Check-in at our cottages is usually 4 p.m. Drive up early in the day if you can, so you arrive in daylight with time to unpack, stock the fridge and find the board games.

Evening: dinner and the main event

Make it a group meal. Assign courses, crown a dessert champion, and put the phone playlist on shuffle. Then games, a fire, a soak, or all three.

Midnight: ring it in

Count down by the fire or in the hot tub under the stars. If anyone's thinking about fireworks, check your township's fireworks rules and the cottage's house rules first, since they vary from place to place.

New Year's Day: the slow morning

Pancakes, coffee, a winter walk by the water. Standard checkout is 10 a.m. If you'd like a little more time, ask us about late checkout.

A few safety notes for the big night

  • Plan for no one to drive after the party. That's the whole point of the cottage.

  • Keep fires in the fire pit or the stove, and follow the posted rules. Our campfire rules guide covers the basics.

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are there for a reason. Never cover or disconnect one, even if somebody's cooking sets it off. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 from outside, as Ontario's Fire Marshal advises.

  • Check the forecast and Ontario 511 before you drive up, and again before you head home.
